Deborah Spencer

Deborah Spencer was instrumental in helping establish the Women's Track and Field program at Memphis State University in the late 1970's.
During her career from 1977 thru 1981, Spencer ran the 400 meters, was the third leg on the 400 meter relay team, ran first leg on the mile relay team, anchored the sprint medley relay team, and also competed in the long-jump.
In 1978, she helped lead the Lady Tigers to the 1978 AIAW National Championship in the 4x400 relay. At the end of her illustrious career in 1981, Spencer held the school records in the 4x400 relay, 880 yard relay, mile relay and long jump. Deborah was voted track and field's Most Valuable Athlete in 1979 and 1980.
In 1981, the M Club voted her Athlete of the Year for track and field. Spencer received her degree in Physical Education in 1982 and continued her love and passion for track and field as a coach and physical education teacher at Whitehaven High School from 1983 to 1987.
She continued teaching and coaching at Millington Central from 1987 until her retirement in 2007.
