The University of Memphis men’s basketball program moved into its new den, FedExForum, for the 2004-05 campaign and, during nearly two decades of action there, has made the arena one of the best environments in collegiate basketball.
The Tigers play all of their home games at FedExForum, the nation’s top arena that is located just off historic Beale Street. Memphis is one of three NCAA Division I schools to play its home games in an NBA arena, but the Tigers are the only basketball program to share the facility with their NBA partner. The UofM has a Tigers’ dedicated locker room/lounge area in FedExForum.
The 2023-24 college basketball season will be the team’s 20th season in FedExForum, and the Tigers have made the facility one of NCAA Division I basketball’s best homecourt advantages. In its 19 seasons, Memphis has posted a 300-53 record (15.8 home wins per season) for an amazing 84.9 winning percentage. The Tigers put together a school-record 47-game homecourt win streak at FedExForum from 2006-08.
A primary reason for Memphis’ success at FedExForum: the fans. Since the arena’s doors opened in November 2004, fans have flocked to FedExForum to watch their beloved Tigers in action. Nearly five million fans have watched Memphis play in the facility for an average of almost 14,000 a game (capacity is 18,400) from 2004-05 to the present. Memphis has ranked among the NCAA Division I leaders in attendance in its years at FedExForum. From 2005-2020, Tigers’ attendance ranked among the nation’s top-25 in 14 of the 19 seasons, including six in the top-10. In FedExForum’s era, Memphis’ highest NCAA ranking for attendance was eighth in 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11.
Tigers fan have witnessed some of the best moments in program history at FedExForum. From the high-profile opponents in Gongaza (Adam Morrison, 2005-06), Georgetown (Roy Hibbert, 2007-08) and Louisville (Russ Smith, 2012-13) to great comeback victories over Xavier (2011-12) and Gonzaga (2013-14), Memphis basketball has produced some of the most thrilling games in its time at FedExForum. Among those top games is the first and only No. 1 vs. No. 2 match-up in men’s college basketball held in the state of Tennessee when top-ranked Memphis hosted rival Tennessee in February 2008.
The UofM’s annual preseason tip-off celebration, Memphis Madness, has turned into a “can’t-miss” event. The last two Memphis Madness events in October of 2018 and 2019 were sold out in advance.
In addition to Tigers games, FedExForum has been host to postseason conference championships and NCAA Tournament regionals. The arena welcomed the Conference USA Championship six times (2005-09, 2012) and The American Championship twice (2014, 2019). NCAA Tournament regionals came to FedExForum for the men in 2009, 2014 and 2017 and the women in 2010, and the arena is slated to host the men’s regional for a fourth time in March of 2021 and also the men's first and second rounds in 2024.
FedExForum is a $250 million, state-of-the-art arena that has the nation still taking notice. When fans come to a game at FedExForum, the excitement begins even before they enter the front doors. FedExForum features a 35,000-square-foot outdoor plaza where all fans enter the building. The plaza serves as Memphis’ front porch, a gathering area for fans of all ages.
Once in their seats, the first thing fans notice is the massive video board that was upgraded prior to the 2017-18 season. Designed by Daktronics, the center-hung scoreboard is the focal point of the system, providing fans with live video, instant replays and information. The upgrades included the installation of a state-of-the-art scoreboard above center court and the addition of four high-definition big screen monitors in the corners of the arena. The main scoreboard display is nearly four times the screen size of the original video board. The main scoreboard also features two “underbelly” video boards for fans sitting courtside.
To complement the center-hung video and scoring displays, additional LED displays are prominently featured around the seating bowl. These ProAd® digital displays are used for a variety of purposes, including presenting exciting animations and graphics, statistics, scores and stats from other games, and interactive promotional messages from the team and its sponsors. One 360-degree ring of light encircles the entire seating bowl, mounted on the Terrace Level fascia. A second large display curves 270 degrees around the Club Level fascia.
The Tigers also have added some changes of their own to FedExForum with three court redesigns prior to the 2013-14, the 2019-20 and the 2022-23 seasons. The first court “change,” which coincided with the UofM’s move to the American Athletic Conference, featured a silhouette of the Memphis downtown skyline and the Hernando de Soto Bridge. The second redesign turned most of the court to Memphis blue with gray shading the three-point areas. The blue sidelines and foul lanes incorporated the Tigers stripes that have become part of the UofM’s look the past few seasons. The new Memphis court was part of a USA Today feature in late February 2020. The latest redesign brought back a more traditional hardwood color with Tiger blue along the sidelines and baselines and a massive Tiger claw scratch through the middle of the court and leaping Tiger logo.
A unique feature of FedExForum is the music theme that is prevalent throughout. Luxury suite holders have their names engraved on a record outside their suite, and lyric sheets from famous Memphis songs appear prominently on the walls. Concessions and restaurants are named with uniquely Memphis music themes and areas of the arena concourses are divided into sponsored zones highlighting musical genres like Rock ‘n’ Roll, the Blues, Gospel, Memphis Music Today and more.
FedExForum also is home to the Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum on the ground floor of the administration building. The Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum traces the roots of rock and roll and soul music in Memphis, offering visitors a self-guided tour of Memphis music from the early 20th century in the ‘70s. The Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum is one of only two Smithsonian Institution exhibits not located in Washington, D.C.
Along with the Grizzlies’ locker room on the Event Level, the Tigers also have a state-of-the-art locker room facility just off the playing floor. The area, which underwent a redesign itself prior to the 2019-20 season, has players’ and coaches’ locker rooms, a training room, video room and players’ lounge. The UofM locker room is one of the best facilities in the nation.
