Track and Soccer Complex
Future Soccer and Track Stadium
The Billy J. Murphy Soccer/Track & Field Complex on the Park Avenue Campus of the University of Memphis has served as home for the track and field program since 1971 and the men’s and women’s soccer programs beginning in 2017.
Capacity for the facility totals 2,042 in grandstand seating on the east side of the complex.
With the addition of stadium lights in the summer of 2019, Memphis men’s and women’s soccer called the complex home for their full season on the UofM campus – the first time since 2000. Previously, both soccer programs primarily played matches at Mike Rose Soccer Complex in southeast Shelby County from 2001-2018. Echles Field, located next to the Larry O. Finch Center, served as the last on-campus home for the Tigers from 1995-2000.
The first full season of play (2019) for men’s and women’s soccer at their new residence also resulted in both programs hosting postseason matches at the facility. The men’s team hosted an opening round match in the American Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship, and the women’s squad, the AAC regular-season champion, hosted the league’s Women’s Soccer Championship semifinals and title match.
The Tigers women’s squad posted one of its best home records in program history in 2019. Memphis defended home turf with a 10-1 mark, including a perfect 9-0 run in the regular season. Since playing games at the Soccer and Track Complex, the Tigers are 48-2-5 at home, among the best home winning percentages in the country. They have gone 28 games without losing at home, a 2021 overtime loss to South Florida.
Since 2022, the men are 15-7-4 at home, including their first ever tournament win in 2023 over SIUE. Since 2021, the two teams are a combined 3-0 at home in the NCAA Tournament.
The men’s and women’s soccer teams played a limited home schedule on the UofM’s Park Avenue Campus in 2017. Women’s soccer won both of its contests against Houston and UConn, while men’s soccer hosted three matches at the facility.
The Murphy Soccer/Track & Field Complex became the home for Memphis soccer following major renovations to the facility. The upgrades included a new soccer playing surface, state-of-the-art track surface, expanded throwing areas and expanded jump pits and pole vault areas, all completed in December 2013.
The nine-lane track features Beynon surfacing, one of the premiere surfaces in track and field. The reconfiguration of the track also allowed for an expanded a grass infield area and a 75x120-yard NCAA regulation soccer field.
The expanded throwing area boasts features for both competition and practice. Located on north end of the complex, the set-up includes two hammer/discus throwing cages separated by shot put practice rings. A separate ring and landing area have also been constructed for actual shot put competition. New pole vault and long/triple jump areas each consists of four runway configurations that accommodate for wind from the four main directions (N/S/E/W). Additionally, the renovations feature an expanded high jump area.
The renovations where made possible in part by The Helen and Jabie Hardin Charitable Trust (Foundation). The $2.6 million donation was the largest single gift for women’s athletics in the history of the University of Memphis.
For almost 50 years, the Murphy Soccer/Track & Field Complex has been the home of the Tigers track and field program. The facility has been the site of six NCAA champions – the last Luke Vaughn winning the NCAA men’s discus crown in 2018 – and numerous All-Americans and all-conference performers. The track and field program hosts the Memphis Tigers Invitational in late April/early May annually.
