Dr. Rayburn W. Johnson came to West Tennessee State Teachers College in the fall of 1926 as an instructor in geology. A 1923 graduate of Middle Tennessee State Teachers College, Johnson had received a second BS from George Peabody Teachers College in 1924 and his Master’s of Arts from Peabody in 1925. After receiving his Ph.D. from WTSTC, Johnson became the faculty representative of the Athletic Committee in 1936 and held that position for nine years. Through his guidance, leadership and continued support of athletics, athletic directors and coaches were able to grow and develop their programs. Dr. Johnson became the head of the Social Sciences Department and current day Johnson Hall is named in his honor. He remained with the University until 1956 when he retired after 30 years of service.
