Earnest Gray is one of the most noted pass receivers in Tiger football history. The Greenwood, Mississippi, native came to the Tigers in 1975 and lettered for four seasons under former head coach Richard Williamson. As a standout wide receiver, Gray set several school records including most touchdown receptions in a season and a career and most total yards receiving in a career. His 94-yard pass reception against Houston in 1978 is still the longest touchdown reception in school history. He is currently ranked 4th for consecutive games with a catch (26), 3rd for receiving yards in a season (826), 1st in average gain per reception in a season (29.5), 6th in touchdown catches in a season (9) and is 4th in games with 100 or more yards receiving (6). He finished his Memphis career with 97 receptions for 2,123 yards and 17 touchdowns. Gray went on to have a seven year career in the National Football League with the New York Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals. He is currently employed with the Memphis Fire Department.
