Elmer Vaughn *

Elmer “Squatty” Vaughn played quarterback for West Tennessee State Teachers College in 1937 and on the undefeated and untied 1938 squad. In 1937, Vaughn led his Tiger team to wins over Austin Peay State, Union University and Jacksonville State to set the stage for the 1938 campaign. Under Vaughn’s direction, the 1938 team rolled up a perfect 10-0 record and out scored their opponents 281 to 41 over the course of 10 games. He also lettered in basketball and tennis while playing for the Tigers. In World War II, he was a highly decorated Navy pilot. After his military career, Vaughn joined the faculty at Southern College of Optometry, where he remained until his death in 1976.
