Frank “Dopey” Mawyer came to Memphis from Jefferson High School in Roanoke, Virginia, in 1949. A tailback and defensive back, Mawyer played for the Tigers from 1949 through 1950. He left the University in 1951 to join the United States Marine Corps and returned to the Tigers in 1953 to complete his career. During his playing career as a Tiger, Mawyer recorded eight pass interceptions, one of which he returned for a 35-yard touchdown. He also registered five rushing touchdowns, three pass receiving scores, two kickoff returns for touchdowns and five punt returns for scores. In 1949, the speedy Mawyer returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in the team’s win over Tampa. His 86 and 96 yard returns stand as the most touchdown returns in a single and his combined 182 yards in returns are also a Memphis record. He was named the Player of the Week on three occasions for Memphis. In addition to be an outstanding football player, Mawyer also played baseball for Memphis. Following graduation, Mawyer taught for several years at CBHS in Memphis and retired after a career in the insurance casualty claims in Memphis.
