George Kirk

A native of Marion, Ohio, George Kirk came to Memphis in the fall of 1960 as a high scoring basketball guard with great ball handling abilities. After a year of freshman basketball, Kirk became a starter as a sophomore during the 1961-62 season and appeared in 22 games for the Tigers. He averaged 8.6 points per game during his first season of collegiate play and finished the year with 188 points and 67 rebounds. Memphis posted a 15-7 record under former head coach Bob Vanatta and received the an invitation to play in the NCAA Regional in Dallas, Texas. As a junior, Kirk upped his scoring average to 13.2 points per outing and added 129 rebounds in helping the squad to a 19-7 mark and a post season invitation to the NIT in Madison Square Gardens. In his final campaign as a Tiger, Kirk scored at a 14.3 point per game clip and totaled 155 rebounds. Memphis finished the season with a 14-11 mark and again went to New York for the NIT. Kirk finished his career with 876 points scored in three seasons. He shot .491 percent from the field for his career and amassed 351 rebounds. Following graduation, Kirk remained in Memphis and had a successful with Morgan-Keegan.
