Hugh Hathcock came to the University of Memphis from Humes High School in Memphis where he was an all-state selection for two years and a prep all-American selection as a senior. He enrolled in 1950 and graduated in three years with a 3.1 GPA. Hathcock, who played for coach Ralph Hatley, worked as an offensive and defensive guard and never missed a game in his career. After college, Hathcock spent 20 years coaching football, basketball and track at Frayser and Germantown High Schools. School administration was next on his list and he served 22 years with the city and county school systems. Not content with retirement, Hathcock returned to coaching football and track at Delta Academy in Marks, Mississippi.
