Jim Mathis competed for The University of Memphis Track Team from 1955-58 running the 220-yard and 440-yard sprints, while also competing for the mile relay team. During his career, Mathis was one of the leading points scorers for the men’s track team, and set school records in both the 220 and 440-yard sprints. Mathis participated in the National AAU track meets after college, and later participated in the National Masters Track and Field Program for athletes 40 and older. In Masters competition, Mathis has set the world record in his age group in the indoor 400 meters, and is a member of the world record 4 x 100 relay team. Mathis also won six national championships in Masters competition. Mathis also helped coach many younger area athletes at various schools in the Mid-South later in life.
