Martha Teuton began teaching at West Tennessee State Normal School in 1919. She was the first instructor to be hired to teach physical education fulltime. She organized a women’s basketball team at the University and in three years as coach posted a record of 38-5-1. Her 1920-21 squad was recognized for playing the school’s first intercollegiate basketball game for women.
