Milton Mayo graduated from Milan (TN) High School in 1932 and despite the depression, enrolled in West Tennessee State Teachers College. Thus he began a long and storied career in education. After playing football, basketball and baseball for coach Zach Curlin at Memphis, Mayo received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the U of M. He returned to Milan and would spend 34 years in the field of education. He served as a coach, teacher, principal and later superintendent of the Milan City School system. During his tenure as head coach, Mayo’s teams won 18 county, district and regional titles. He was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1990, the Gibson County Sports Hall of Fame in 1995 and was selected the Milan Man of the Year in 1996.
