Five Clemson pitchers combined to hold Memphis to just four hits as CU posted a 7-2 win over Memphis in the rubber game of the non-conference weekend series. Memphis falls to 8-5, while Clemson improves to 10-4.
Clemson got on the board first, plating a two runs in both the second and third innings for an early 4-0 advantage. DH Doug Hogan led the second off with a double to the rightfield corner and then stole third on a double steal with Alex Burg who walked. David Bunnell's single up the middle put CU on the board 2-0.
With the two-run cushion, Clemson got leadoff walks by Brad Chalk and Taylor Harbin. A sac fly by Marquez Smith and a single by Burg made it 4-0 after three innings.
Memphis got back into the game with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. K.K. Chalmers and Josh Irvin drew back-to-back walks. Both stole their way into scoring position for Will Petersen, who lined a single into leftfield to cut the Clemson lead to 4-2. Chalmers two stolen bases were the 62nd and 63rd of his career, moving him just four bases shy of the program's stolen base record of 66. Petersen swiped second, but CU reliever Brock Schnabel was able to induce an inning-ending groundball.
Clemson came right back with two more tallies in the fifth, to push its lead back to four runs. Consecutive singles by Andy D'Alessio and Smith led off the inning. A passed ball and wild pitch allowed Smith to score and a run-scoring single from freshman Addison Johnson made it 6-2. An RBI-double by Taylor Harbin in the eighth brought home the last run of the day for the 7-2 final.
Memphis starter Lance Scoggins was the losing hurler, The southpaw gave up just two hits in two innings, but allowed four runs to go with three walks and a hot batsman. Clemson's Alan Farina was the winning pitcher after giving up two runs on two hits in 4.2 innings. He struck out a pair.
