Women's Golf Ranked 33rd in First Rankings of Season

The University of Memphis women’s golf team was ranked No. 33 in the country in the first rankings of the year by Golfweek.com.
“Our goal is to be a Top 50 team,” Head Coach Beth Harrelson said. “I think Lady Tiger golf has reached the top 50 one time in the history of the program. So our goal this year is to be in the top 50 and we’re putting it out there for ourselves and others to know.”
In Memphis’ history in the Golfweek rankings, the Lady Tigers have ranked in the year-end top 50 just two times before (the 2000-01 and 2001-2002 seasons). Memphis’ best-ever year end ranking was No. 36, at the end of the 2001-02 season. Memphis has finished in Golfweek’s top 100 seven times in the 15 years of the magazine’s poll. Memphis finished last season ranked No. 136.
The first rankings included both of the Lady Tigers’ runner-up finishes in their first two tournaments. Thanks to those two tournament second place finishes, Memphis is 3-2 against top 50 ranked teams this season, 8-2 against top 100 schools and has already faced one top 25 school (Louisville). The Lady Tigers finished second to host Louisville in their last tournament at the Cardinal Cup.
Golfweek also ranks individual players. Freshman Michaela Fletcher is ranked No. 27 in the country after her runner-up finish at the Cardinal Cup with a 1-0 mark vs. Top 50 ranked opponents and a 4-1 mark against top 100 players. Sophomore Leighann Cabush is ranked 80th in the poll and freshman Emily Goldenstein rounds out the Lady Tigers in the top 200, coming in at 190 through two tournaments.
The Lady Tigers are back on the road for another fall tournament next Monday and Tuesday as they head north to compete at the Cincinnati Fall Invitational, Oct. 6-7th at TPC River’s Bend. That tournament is three of five on the fall slate for Memphis. Memphis also plays at The Waverly (Oct. 20-22) and the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational in Tampa (Nov. 2-4).
