Tigers Conclude Blues City Classic With Win Over Tennessee State

Memphis won all five games this weekend and Rebeca Melton hit her first collegiate home run in the win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Freshman catcher Rebeca Melton hit her first collegiate home run and drove in a total of two runs in the 6-3 win over Tennessee State Sunday afternoon. The Tigers were originally scheduled to play the TSU Tigers at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, but weather plagued play in the morning and the two squads got started around 3:40 p.m.

Memphis improves to 9-7 on the year after going a perfect 5-0 at the Blues City Classic.

The Tigers scored first, but quickly found themselves down 2-1 after the Tennessee State half of the second inning. Memphis answered with one in the second and one in the third including Rebeca Melton's first career home run in the bottom of the third.

Three more runs for the Tigers in the fourth helped expand the lead by four. Memphis strung together seven consecutive hits in that inning.

Memphis finished the game with 13 hits while allowing just six by Tennessee State. Four Tiger batters registered multi-hit games. Katie Brignac improved to 3-0 on the weekend after pitching in 6.1 innings for Memphis.

Who Stood Out
Addison Maxwell / RF / Junior / Collierville, Tenn.
Maxwell led the Tigers with three hits and two RBI against Tennessee State. She finished the weekend hitting .412 and went 5-for-6 on the base paths

Kyler Trosclair / SS / Junior / Houma, La.
Trosclair recorded another multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate with a stolen base. She finished with 10 hits this weekend with a double and five stolen bases.

Lindsay Crowdus / CF / Senior / Houma, La.
Crowdus recorded two hits and a run scored in the win Sunday. She finished the weekend with 10 hits, seven stolen bases, two triples and is currently hitting .500 this season.

Katie Brignac / P / Junior / River Ridge, La.
Brignac pitched a complete game shutout with four strikeouts against Wright State. She improves to 2-0 on the year.

Rebeca Melton / C / Freshman / Charlotte, Tenn.
Melton hit her first career home run in the bottom of the third inning to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. She finished with a walk, a single, and a home run. She registered a team-high two RBI.

Bottom 1 – Addison Maxwell and Lindsay Crowdus hit back-to-back singles to put runners on. A walk to Rebeca Melton loaded the bases and Erin Parker grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Maxwell. (1 run, 2 hits, 0 errors, 2 left on base)
Top 2 – A pair of Memphis errors combined with a pair of Tennessee State singles led to two runs scoring in the top of the second. (2 runs, 2 hits, 2 errors, 2 left on base)
Bottom 2 – Brooke Lee doubled to right field with one out. She advanced to third on an illegal pitch and scored on a wild pitch. (1 run, 2 hits, 0 errors, 2 left on base)
Bottom 3 – Rebeca Melton hit her first career home run in the bottom of the third. (1 run, 1 hit, 0 errors, 0 left on base)
Bottom 4 – With one out, the Tigers strung together seven-straight singles with three stolen bases to score three runs. (3 runs, 7 hits, 0 errors, 3 left on base)
Top 6 – A double combined with a single led to a run scoring in the sixth. (1 run, 2 hits, 0 errors, 1 left on base)

The Tigers will resume play at the Tigers Softball Complex Friday night for the UofM Softball Tournament.
