Tigers continue to post outstanding marks in the classroom.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – What a year, Tiger Nation! It's like 2019, please don't go.
Â
University of Memphis athletics, indeed, had a tremendous 2019 in the arenas of competition. And the Tigers were just as impressive in the classroom throughout the year, including their 2019 fall semester report card that was released Wednesday.
Â
The Memphis athletics department posted a 3.171 grade-point average (GPA) for the 2019 fall semester, marking the 13th consecutive term with at least a 3.0 GPA. Fourteen of the 17 teams recorded a 3.0 GPA or higher.
Â
"I'm extremely proud of our student-athletes," said Fernandez West, Associate Athletics Director for Academic Services and Director of the Center for Athletic Academic Services (CAAS). "The demands of being a student-athlete increase each and every year, and the hard work these students have displayed are testament to their dedication, persistence and not giving up. A big thank you also goes to our coaches, faculty and CAAS staff for the hours upon hours of behind-the-scenes work they put in day in and day out."
Â
Leading the academic success parade were men's golf and women's soccer, which posted the department's highest male and female sport GPA, respectively. The men's golf team recorded a 3.48 GPA, and the women's soccer squad a 3.72 GPA. The women's soccer GPA was the highest among the department's 17 teams.
Three GPA records were set in the 2019 fall semester. The men's basketball team recorded its all-time highest GPA at 3.02, breaking its previous record in the 2018 fall semester (2.907). The other two GPA records were highest for the department's freshman class (3.415) and freshman female group (3.622).
Â
This fall, 50 student-athletes were members of the 4.0 GPA Club and 159 were named to the Dean's List (3.50 or higher GPA), with 61 of them freshmen. More than 250 student-athletes (259) earned a 3.0 GPA or higher and earned Tiger 3.0 recognition.Â
Â
The Memphis cheer and pom squads had a good fall semester as both teams' GPA were 3.0 or higher. The two teams combined for seven members with a 4.0 GPA, 25 on the Dean's List and 38 in the Tiger 3.0 Club.
Â
Academic Highlights:
The 2019 fall semester report card wrapped up an entire year of academic success for Memphis.
Â
It started in early May with the largest contingent of student-athletes to go through spring commencement. Seventy Tigers earned their diplomas, and of those 70 graduates, 41 did so with honors. Following graduation, Memphis Athletics released its report card for the 2019 spring semester, and Tigers student-athletes posted a 3.21 grade-point average (GPA). It was the department's 12th-straight semester with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
Â
The good news for athletics continued in May with the release of the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores, and 15 of the 17 Tigers programs were above or near the national APR average for their sports. Furthermore, no Memphis programs received NCAA postseason bans or penalties.
Â
In July, more than 200 student-athletes were named to the American Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll. It was the third-consecutive year that 200 or more Tigers received the recognition.
Â
Then, in October, the NCAA released that the Memphis Graduation Success Rate (GSR) was at 92 percent, the highest mark in the department's history. It was the fifth year in a row that the Tigers set a GSR record. Memphis' 92 GSR was four points higher than the national GSR (88).
Â
The Tigers' 92 GSR was second among American Athletic Conference members and was tied for the highest score among public institutions in the state of Tennessee. Thirteen of Memphis' 15 programs had GSR above the national average in their sports.
