UofM has 200 or more student-athletes earn the honor for the fourth straight year.
IRVING, Texas – The University of Memphis Athletics' record-smashing numbers in the academics realm continue for 2019-20 with the American Athletic Conference's release of the league's All-Academic Team Thursday. The Tigers placed a school-record 283 student-athletes on the conference's All-Academic Team.
This year's 283 AAC All-Academic honorees shattered the previous mark of 216 in 2017-18. It is the fourth straight year Memphis has placed 200 or more student-athletes on the conference's All-Academic Team.
In addition, women's soccer received an AAC Team Academic Excellence Award Thursday. UofM Athletics now has earned 29 AAC Team Academic Excellence Awards since joining the league prior to the 2013-14 campaign.
The 283 AAC All-Academic honorees add to an already incredible 2019-20 year in the classroom for the Tigers. In late May, UofM Athletics announced it posted 15 semester grade-point average (GPA) records, including an overall department-best 3.52 GPA. It was the 14th consecutive term Memphis athletics posted a 3.0 GPA or higher, and all 17 programs recorded a 3.0 GPA or higher.
In mid-May, the UofM had a record-setting NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) report in which six programs – women's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf, football, men's soccer, women's soccer – set program APR records. Three of those programs – women's basketball, women's golf, men's soccer – had the highest APR in the American Athletic Conference.
The month of May kicked off with 47 student-athletes among the largest graduating class in the University's history.
In January, the UofM's fall report card revealed a 3.17 GPA for the department's 13th straight semester with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Fourteen of the 17 programs had a 3.0 or higher GPA for the 2019 fall semester. At the end of the 2019 fall semester in December, 20 Tigers earned their degrees.
Memphis' 2019-20 year of tremendous academic success started last October when the NCAA released that the Memphis Graduation Success Rate (GSR) was at 92 percent (2009-12 cohort), the highest mark in the department's history. It was the fifth year in a row that the Tigers set a GSR record. Memphis' 92 GSR was four points higher than the national GSR (88).
