MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Tigers come up short in pitching battle with No 25 UCF in series finale 3-1.
Mariah Nichols got the start in the circle for the Tigers in the series finale. This is her 21st appearance in the circle this season, which is good for eighth most appearances in the American. Nichols threw her second complete game of the season. She gave up three runs on six hits and had four strikeouts.
Gianna Mancha got her second start of the series in the circle for the Knight. She had a perfect game going into the seventh inning, only giving up two hits and zero runs.
No 25 UCF once again got on the board first. In the top of the first, Jada Cody hit a two run home run over the center field scoring Denali Schappacher and making it a 2-0 ballgame.
After three innings of trading zeros in a pitching battle, The Knights threaten with runners on third and second with no outs. Mia Greenzweig makes a leaping catch at short, then doubles up Kyra Klarkowski at third.
No 25 UCF would add one more run in the top of the sixth inning on a single by Katie Burge, scoring Takiya London from third, extending their lead to 3-0.
Brady Rowland led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a solo home run to center field, giving the Tigers their first run and hit of the game. Delaney Smith followed it up with a single to short then a stolen base to get into scoring position. Unfortunately for the Tigers they could not get her home and dropped the series finale 3-1.
The stolen base by Smith was her 77th career stolen base. She is now just one away from tying the all-time stolen base record in Memphis softball history.
The Tigers fall to 7-33(0-16) and the Knights improve 34-12-1(13-6-1).
Up Next
The Tigers will finish up non-conference play on Tuesday in Conway, Arkansas against Central Arkansas. First pitch against the Bears is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Farris Field.
