MEMPHIS, Tenn. – With the 2022-23 athletic season marking 50 years since the signing of Title IX into federal law in 1972, the University of Memphis Athletic Department is excited to announce the 901Women: Supporting Her Future initiative, which will honor 50 years of competitive and academic excellence within the department's women's sports programs while helping to support current and future Tiger student-athletes.
"We are thrilled to announce the launch of 901Women: Supporting Her Future on such an important day in our country's history," said Executive Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator Lauren Ashman. "This tremendous opportunity will allow us to promote our history of women's athletics, celebrate and inspire Tiger women's sports programs, student-athletes, staff and administrators as well as generate support for next generation of trailblazers. The 901Women initiative, designed by women for women, will be woven into the fabric of Memphis Athletics through stewardship, mentorship and engagement, and I am so proud to be a small part of it."
"We are all so proud of Lauren, Christina and the 901Women committee for their leadership in establishing this special and important initiative," Memphis Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Laird Veatch said. "As they developed this vision - similar to our UMADE program - it was important that we establish something that is not only impactful but sustainable; something that will having a lasting impact on our department culture and for the young women in our athletics programs for years to come. I greatly appreciate these efforts and consider them another critical step up as we continue to elevate Memphis Athletics!"
The initiative will help to inspire and generate philanthropic support for the enhancement of athletic, academic and personal experiences for all current and future female student-athletes at the University of Memphis. Specific plans for the initiative include:
"The 901Women initiative was founded to elevate the strategic vision for our women's athletic programs, creating a championship level experience to match the high level of play and character that these women display as Memphis Tigers," Assistant Athletic Director for Annual Fund Christina Wiatr said. "For the past fifty years, female student-athletes representing Memphis have brought notoriety and recognition to the city and the university for their exceptional performance in the classroom and in competition. They have continued to exemplify what it means to be a winner, but more importantly what it means to be a Memphis Tiger."
In addition, former student-athletes and administrators who helped to build the women's sports programs will have the chance to talk about their experience and how the ways of collegiate athletics have changed for women in a year-long video series. Trailblazers such as Lynn Parkes, Mary Lou Johns, Diane Hale and more will give followers an inside look at how Memphis women's athletics has grown in the last 50 years and what it means to those who helped paved the way for Tiger student-athletes of today.
