
Memphis Student-Athletes Break Numerous Records in NCAA Academic Progress Rate Release

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis student-athletes continued their outstanding performances in the classroom in the latest NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) release, which encompasses the 2019-20 through 2022-23 academic years. Each of Memphis' athletic programs exceeded the NCAA-mandated APR score of 930.
Memphis' institutional APR rate of 992 in 2022-23 sets a new mark, beating the previous record of 991 set in 2019-20 and 2020-21. The Tigers' APR of 992 also surpasses the NCAA benchmark of 985.
A record-breaking 13 teams earned a perfect single-year APR score of 1,000 in 2022-23, surpassing the department's previous record of 10 set twice in the last four years. The teams that scored a perfect 1,000 in 2022-23 were women's cross country, men's cross country, men's tennis, women's tennis, women's golf, men's golf, men's track and field, women's track and field, mixed rifle, softball, women's soccer, volleyball and men's basketball.
In the multi-year APR score, an average of the 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23 academic years, a record six teams earned a perfect score of 1,000 – men's golf, women's golf, women's cross country, women's tennis, mixed rifle and softball. The Tigers' also set a department record with four teams scoring a perfect 1,000 score in back-to-back years.
Women's golf has earned a perfect multi-year APR score in 13-straight years and 14 times in program history and both golf programs have had multi-year 1,000s in back-to-back years. Both women's cross country and women's tennis have earned multi-year 1,000s for the last two years.
"Our athletics program and University have much to be proud of and we congratulate our student-athletes on their continued success in the classroom," Interim Athletic Director Jeff Crane remarked. "Evident by this year's record-breaking performance, our Center for Athletic Academic Success, coaches, staff and, most importantly, our student-athletes continue to make classroom success a priority."
The APR provides a real-time look at a program's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
The latest APR release is not the only metric showcasing how Memphis student-athletes are prioritizing academic success.
This past spring, Memphis student-athletes set the all-time departmental grade point average record with a 3.395. It also marked the 22nd-consecutive term with a 3.0 or higher departmental GPA and was the fifth-straight semester with a 3.2 or higher GPA.
In the spring, the Tigers had 273 student-athletes with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, 156 earn Dean's List honors (3.5 or higher) and 68 in the 4.0 GPA Club. A total of 16 programs posted a team GPA of 3.0 or better.
