MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Memphis women's soccer won its first match of the season, securing a 5-1 victory over Alabama A&M on Thursday night at the Track and Soccer Field.

The win marked the 300th of Brooks Monaghan's 25-year coaching career. He joins a list of 45 Division I women's soccer coaches to win 300 career games, and he is one of 17 to reach the milestone with the same Division I program.

"I've had so many great memories with this program," said Monaghan. "Even amid the grind of the season, it's nice to be able to step back and appreciate the success that the girls have had."

The Tigers (1-0) took just two minutes to open the scoring on senior night, as sophomore forward Ashley Henderson poked a loose ball into the back of the net. The Memphis native would add to her tally six minutes later after being released by a Momo Nakao through ball.

Junior defender Izzy Monck got on the end of a 19th-minute corner to add the third goal of the half. The middle-40 minutes saw the Tigers create plenty of chances, but Nakao's strike in the 59th minute made the lead four, the 12th goal of the midfielder's career.

The Bulldogs (0-1) hung around the game and capitalized on a counterattack to score in the 75th minute through Chelsie Charles, their only shot of the game. Memphis was able to respond quickly as an own goal two minutes later made the score 5-1.

Henderson's 10-minute brace is the first of her collegiate career. Sophomore defender Finley Lavin provided the assist for Nakao's second-half goal.

The Tigers totaled 23 shots and forced goalkeeper Liliana Ribeiro into 10 saves.

Memphis will hit the road this weekend to take on Missouri on Sunday, August 18, at 7 p.m.
