MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis student-athletes continued their outstanding performances in the classroom in the latest NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) release for the 2023-24 academic year. All 17 athletic programs exceeded the NCAA-mandated APR score of 930 while the department as a whole had a 987 APR score.
"We have established a culture of academic excellence throughout the year and the APR benchmarks are evident of that," Senior Vice President and Director of Athletics Director Ed Scott, Ph.D. said. "We congratulate our student-athletes on their continued success in the classroom and dedication to being well-rounded student-athletes. Thank you to our Center for Athletic Academic Success, coaches, staff and, most importantly, our student-athletes who continue to emphasize the importance of academic excellence."
Additionally, five Tiger programs were recognized by the NCAA for having APR scores in the top-10 percent of their respective sport in 2023-24; baseball, women's cross country, women's golf, women's tennis and women's volleyball. Of these programs, women's cross country, women's golf, women's tennis, women's volleyball, and mixed rifle all scored a perfect 1,000 APR.
Women's golf has earned a perfect multi-year APR score in 14-straight years and 15 times in program history. Both women's cross country and women's tennis have earned multi-year 1,000s for the last three years.
The APR provides a real-time look at a program's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
The APR release is not the only metric showcasing how Memphis student-athletes are prioritizing academic success.
This past fall, the University of Memphis recorded the highest departmental GPA ever during the fall 2024 semester, recording a 3.404 grade point average with 16 teams coming in at a 3.0 or higher for the term. Along with the department record, Memphis recorded its 23rd consecutive term with a 3.0 GPA or higher, its straight semester of a 3.2 GPA or higher.
