MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's tennis team continued its fall campaign over the weekend, sending student-athletes to a pair of tournaments at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Birmingham, Alabama, and the Hurricane Invite in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Senior Leonie Moeller, fifth-year Maria Santos, sophomore Alicia Mall and freshman Mailina Nedderhut represented the Tigers at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic, which featured competitors from Alabama State, Baylor, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, North Alabama, UAB, Utah, West Alabama and Wake Forest.
The tournament was played in a team format, with each matchup consisting of two doubles and four singles matches, each worth one point. Memphis earned the No. 4 seed and opened the tournament with a dominant 5-1 victory over Baylor.
The Tigers swept both doubles matches against the Bears, with Santos/Nedderhut earning a 6-4 victory and Moeller/Mall picking up a 6-3 win.
Memphis carried the momentum into singles play, winning three of four matches. Nedderhut and Santos each cruised to straight-set victories, while No. 107 Moeller defeated Gabrielle Villegas, 6-2, 6-0.
The opening-round victory advanced Memphis to a matchup with top-seeded Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons claimed both doubles matches before taking two of four singles contests to earn a 4-2 victory. Moeller and Santos provided the Tigers' two points, with Moeller defeating Lillian Santos, 6-4, 7-5, and Santos topping Aubrey Nisbet, 6-4, 6-3.
Memphis closed out the tournament against No. 2 seed Utah, falling 5-1 to finish fourth overall. Nedderhut earned the Tigers' lone point of the matchup, defeating Nike Lenz in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
Moeller, Santos and Nedderhut each collected three victories across singles and doubles play during the tournament.
Four more Tigers competed at the Hurricane Invite, with junior Clemence Thouard, sophomore Emma Dvorackova, sophomore Natalia Koppova and freshman Nela Linhartova taking on athletes from host Tulsa, Arkansas State, Omaha and New Mexico.
The three-day event followed an individual round-robin format, with each Tiger competing in one doubles and one singles match each day.
Dvorackova picked up Memphis' first victory of the tournament Friday, defeating New Mexico's Ana Veroux, 6-0, 7-6 (3). She followed that performance with another singles victory Saturday, battling back after dropping the opening set to defeat Omaha's Shelby Smith, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3).
Koppova also collected a pair of singles victories over the weekend. She defeated New Mexico's Vianca Corley, 6-4, 7-6 (3), on Saturday before closing the tournament Sunday with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over New Mexico's Yu Yun Tsai.
