Tigers Fall to No. 8 Baylor at UTR College Championships

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – The University of Memphis men's tennis team fell 4-0 to No. 8 Baylor on Saturday afternoon in the first round of the UTR College Championships at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Memphis opened the match by taking the first doubles result. The duo of Maxime Dubouch/Moritz Kudernatsch earned a 6-4 victory over Alexandru Chirita/Zsombor Velcz on court one to give the Tigers an early boost. Baylor responded quickly, however, claiming the remaining two doubles matches to secure the point. Luc Koenig and Connor Van Schalkwyk defeated Marcos Castro Fabra/Sam Reeve 6-4 on court two before Blake Anderson and Devin Badenhorst edged Obrad Markovski/Marko Milosavljevic 7-6 (7-5) on court three to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
Baylor carried that momentum into singles play, earning victories on the top three courts to clinch the match. No. 53 Zsombor Velcz defeated Moritz Kudernatsch 6-2, 6-2 on court two to extend the Bears' lead before No. 27 Connor Van Schalkwyk topped Marcos Castro Fabra 6-4, 7-5 on court three. No. 12 Devin Badenhorst secured the deciding point with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Maxime Dubouch on court one to seal the 4-0 result for Baylor. Three additional singles matches were left unfinished once the team result was decided.
Memphis falls to 7-8 and will stay in Indian Wells, Calif. for the third-place match of the UTR College Championships against No. 19 Arizona State. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 15.
