M Club History
The M Club originated in 1970 as the Inner M Club and was primarily a football letterman’s association until 1973. The M Club was then named the Memphis State Letterman’s Club and was part of the alumni association for all alumni lettermen.
The first Hall of Fame induction ceremony and dinner was held in 1973 and since then a number of awards have developed including the Dr. C.C. Humphreys Golden Tiger Award, the Billy J. Murphy Award, the Ralph Hatley Silver M Award and the Murray Armstrong Award. For the period of 1973-2019 there have been 457 M Club Hall of Fame inductees and honorees.
Today, the M Club offers membership to any letterwinner. A letterwinner is a student athlete, manager, trainer or spirit squad member who actively participates and competes in a University of Memphis varsity sport to a degree that is satisfactory with the team coach and is awarded an athletic letter.
