Memphis Spirit Squads
University of Memphis Spirit Squads
An integral part of the game day experience at the University of Memphis is the program's Spirit Squad. Made up of three components: pom, cheer and mascot, the team performs at home football, men's and women's basketball games and other special events for the University of Memphis Athletic Department. The team also travels to select road events, spreading Tiger spirit.
POM SQUAD
Widely regarded as one of the most talented dance teams in the nation, the U of M POM squad has amassed an unprecedented 14 national titles, including back-to-back Division IA Hip Hop national titles in 2007 and 2008 as well as 2011 and 2012. The team also finished fifth nationally in the UDA Division IA Pom competition and fourth in UDA Division IA Hip Hop in 2014. The dance team has competed in the hiphop and pom categories and has also competed in jazz. The pom squad has placed in the top 4 of the hiphop division since the division started, placing runner up in 2018 and 2019.
On game days, the POM squad entertains Tiger Nation with a medley of intricately-choreographed routines, helping to energize and excite the crowds at U of M’s sporting events.
CHEERLEADERS
Known for their distinctive blue and gray uniforms, smiling faces and positive demeanors, Memphis cheerleading teams dazzle the crowds at U of M athletic events by performing a medley of charismatic cheers, stunts and high-flying acrobatics.
In addition to their game-day duties, the U of M cheer squads also compete on the national level in the coed division of the Universal Cheerleader’s Association (UCA). Memphis’ coed cheerleading team claimed the 2013 College Cheerleading Championship, topping fellow national powers Kentucky and Alabama, and posted a top 10 finish in the 2014 national championships. Last year, the coed squad finished second in the small coed division.
MASCOT
Also part of the cheerleading squad, Pouncer can be seen energizing the crowds from the playing field/court and through the stands. Game day would not be complete without spotting Pouncer heckling the opponent's mascot, or mugging for photos with the youngest Tiger fans.
