Charles “Red” Brewer, a native of Columbus, Mississippi, came to the Tigers after attending Copiah-Lincoln Junior College in Mississippi. He lettered for two years in football and three years in baseball for then Memphis State College. Brewer set the batting average record in 1950 and received the Pi Kappa Alpha “Most Outstanding Baseball Player” Award that same season. Brewer played tailback and defensive back for Memphis prior to receiving his degree in June of 1952. He entered the United States Air Force in 1953 and was stationed in the Philippines, where he played for and coached the Clark AFB team. Brewer, the brother of former Ole Miss football coach Billy Brewer, returned to Memphis as freshman football coach in 1956 and received his master’s degree. After working as a teacher and coach in the West Tennessee area, Brewer became the principal at Beech Hill High School and later at Pulaski Junior High School, where he retired in June of 1991.
