David Berrong, a native of Sweetwater, Tennessee, came to the University of Memphis in 1966 under head coach Billy J. Murphy. He played football for the Tigers for four years and started at safety for two and a half seasons. He was named All-Missouri Valley Conference in 1968 and 1969 and was runner-up for the MVC Defensive Player of the Year. For his play during the 1969 season Berrong was named to the Associated Press and Football News All-America teams and was picked to play in the Blue-Gray Classic in Montgomery, Alabama and the Lions All-American Game in Tampa, Florida. He recorded four pass interceptions in the Blue-Gray Game and was named the games’s Defensive MVP. Berrong, who holds the Memphis record for most pass interceptions in a career with 17, is ranked fourth in career punt return average at 11.4 yards and fourth in interception return yardage at 196. He is currently a teacher and coach at Lenoir City (TN) High School.
