Gene Fulghum came to West Tennessee State Teachers College in 1926 from his home in Bolivar, Tennessee, to play football for former head coach Zach Curlin. Known for his speed and power, Fulghum worked an a tackle in the offensive and defensive lines but also action at quarterback due to his ability to throw the long pass. Joining with such noted players as Sam Johnson, Dub Jones and Ed Thompson, Fulghum helped the 1929 squad to an undefeated season and the Mississippi Valley Conference championship. The four-year football letterman also played basketball for Coach Curlin and is known as a “defensive stalwart” who could stop any opponent. Following graduation, Fulghum built a reputation as an outstanding college football official. He died in March of 1992.
