George “Billie” Zarecor came to West Tennessee State Teachers College in the fall of 1937, arriving at the same time as new head coach Allyn McKeen. He lettered for two years as an offensive and defensive lineman, working as a right tackle on offense. An outstanding athlete, Zarecor helped the young Tiger team to a 3-6-0 record in 1937 and set the stage for the schools only undefeated and untied football campaign in history. The 1938 team produced a 10-0-0 record and was invited to play San Jose in the Prune Bowl in California. Only a lack of a financial guarantee kept the Tigers from attending their first bowl. Zarecor, who was voted the Most Athletic Boy for the 1938-39 school year, was also a two-year letterman for coach Zach Curlin’s basketball team. The Yorkville, Tennessee, native received his BS degree in 1939 and would later become president of Hiland Feed Mill and Subsidiaries in Union City, Tennessee.
