Henry “Rabbitt” Evans, who played at the University of Memphis from 1926-30, lettered in football, basketball, and baseball for the Tigers, and was voted West Tennessee Teachers’ Best Boy Athlete in 1929. A hot-shooting guard on the basketball team, a rangy shortstop on the diamond, and a speedy end for the footballers, he lettered for three years in all three sports. Evans, who is receiving this award posthumously, became a coach, teacher, principal and superintendent of schools in Decatur County for most of his life. He received his law degree from Cumberland University Law School and was licensed to practice law in 1940. He became a newspaper owner and editor as well following graduation, and was later elected mayor of Decaturville, Tennessee serving two terms. He re-enrolled at Memphis State in 1957 and received his master’s degree in School Administration.
