Lowery Kirk, a native of Hornsby, Tennessee, came to then Memphis State College in 1956 as a forward for the Tiger basketball team. Playing for former head coach Bob Vanatta, he appeared in just three games during the 1956-57 season but became a starter for his sophomore season. Kirk scored 162 points in his second campaign, averaging 7.1 points per contest. The Tigers posted a record of 15-7 and won the Sugar Bowl Championship in New Orleans. As a junior Kirk tallied 323 points to go along with 128 rebounds. His 14.1 point per game scoring average was ranked among the team leaders and helped the squad to a 18-5 record. Memphis won the Murray State Invitational and earned an invitation to the NIT at the end of the season. As a senior Kirk tossed in 13.6 points per contest and had 170 rebounds. The team posted a 20-3 record and was again invited to New York for the post-season NIT. Kirk finished his career scoring 759 points in 69 games played. Following graduation, Kirk began a career with Roadway Truck Lines.
