Mike Dlugach was perhaps the finest catcher in Tiger baseball history. A native Memphian and a graduate of Overton High School, Dlugach played two seasons for Al Brown and two for Bobby Kilpatrick before graduating in 1973. As a freshman he set new school records for most hits in a season with 51, most runs scored in a season with 30 and most runs scored in a game with four. He batted .338 in his first season, collecting 16 RBIs and six doubles. Over the course of his career, Dlugach would be named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference first team four consecutive seasons, the only played in Tiger history to achieve such an honor. As a senior, Dlugach batted .398, set a new record for hits with 53 and added 12 doubles, which was also a new school mark. Throughout his career, Dlugach played in 149 of 156 games played and still holds the Tiger record for the most consecutive games played at 149. During his final campaign, Memphis posted wins over such programs as LSU, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Arkansas and Louisville. His .388 career batting average still ranks fourth in the Tiger record book and his 11 career triples, the most by a Memphis catcher, ranks 6th all-time.
