Phil Chamberlain has played an integral part in the growth of Memphis Tiger tennis from his days as a top rated player, to his tenure as head tennis coach. A native of Perth, Australia, Chamberlain first donned a uniform for head coach Tommy Buford in 1973 and played through the 1976 season. He played the number one singles position throughout his career. He was the Metro Conference singles and doubles champion in 1975 and 1976 and helped his Tiger team to a number 18 national ranking in 1975. He also teamed with Keith West to win the NCAA Southern Doubles Championship in 1984. Before arriving in Memphis, Chamberlain won the Australian Team Championship, the Linton Cup, in 1972. From 1972 through 1982, Chamberlain won 14 Singles USTA sanction titles, and 37 Doubles USTA sanctioned championships. He served as assistant coach under Tommy Buford during the 1979 and 1980 seasons and also coached the Tennessee Junior Davis Cup and Wrightman Cup teams from 1984-88. His 1988 Wrightman Cup Team won the championship. He was inducted into the Tennessee Tennis Hall of Fame in 2001. Chamberlain graduated cum laude from Memphis in 1976.
