As a senior, he threw for 340 yards against Mississippi State in a season-opening win in Starkville, Mississippi, eclipsing his previous career best of 335 yards passing in the 1992 East Carolina game. Matthews would compile 1,896 yards passing before the '93 Ole Miss game, but his season come to a sudden end when he suffered a broken leg against the Rebels.

He and his wife Carole lived in Murfreesboro but spend part of the year in Memphis while Matthews coached for the Memphis Explorers Arena2 Football Team.
