Terron Wright is one of the greatest sprinters in Memphis track history. A native of Memphis, Tennessee and a graduate of South Side High School, Wright was the Tennessee state high school champion and record holder in the 180 low hurdles with a time of :18.9. He attended Texas Southern University for one year where he received NAIA All-America honors in track before transferring to Memphis in 1979. Wright immediately became a star for coach Glenn Hays in the sprints and hurdles. In the winter of 1979, he set the Tiger record for the indoor 100 meters with a time of :10.11 and the 55 meter hurdles with a :7.16. Two years later he set a new Memphis mark in the 300 yard indoor with a time of :29.26. Wright excelled in the 200 meters and posted a record time of :20.39 outdoors in 1981. He qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championship and placed fifth in 1981 with a time of :21.01. In 1982, the speedster placed fourth in the NCAA Outdoor 200 meter with a time of 20.73. He received All-America honors both years. He became a National Champion in 1981 winning the NCAA 60 yard hurdles with a time of :7.16. He also ran the fastest 300 meters in the world in 1981 with a :29.27. Following his collegiate career, Wright continued to run and qualified for the USA Team for the boycotted Moscow Olympics. Wright returned to Memphis following his competitive career.
