Nichols To Join Lady Tiger Hoops Staff

Brenda Welch-Nichols, who has nine years of collegiate coaching experience at the junior college level, has been hired as an assistant women's basketball coach at The University of Memphis.
Nichols joins the Lady Tiger staff after serving three years as the head basketball coach at Okaloosa-Walton Community College in Niceville, Fla. In her three-year stint, she led her squads to a 63-27 record and two second-place and a third-place finish in the Panhandle Conference.
This past season, Nichols led her team to a 19-11 record and a second-place conference finish. OWCC ranked as high as fifth nationally and represented the Panhandle Conference in the NJCAA Regional Tournament. Her second season at OWCC was her best as she led her squad to a 25-7 record and a second-place finish in the Panhandle Conference.
Prior to joining OWCC, Nichols served two years as the head coach at Western Texas College in Snyder, Texas where she recorded a 17-42 record. Her coaching career began at Pensacola Junior College where she served as an assistant coach from 1990-1994 and helped lead PJC to a 90-30 record and a Panhandle Conference title in three of the four seasons.
Nichols is also active in the community where she has participated in numerous basketball clinics, camps and programs, as well as serving as a youth league basketball and softball coach since 1986. She also volunteers as a scout leader for Girl Scouts where she began mentor programs for younger Girl Scouts, assisting with fitness and badge workshops.
Originally from Jennings, La., Nichols received her bachelor's degree in physical education from Sam Houston State and her master's of education from the University of West Florida. The former Brenda Welch, she is married to Barry Nichols. The couple has one son, Brady (6).
