Freshman Tyler Huelsing and senior Adam Amar each collected three hits and drove in two to lead Memphis to a 9-4 win over UAB in the series finale. The victory completes a series sweep of the Blazers for the Tigers, who have now won eight of the last nine Conference USA games.
In just the fourth start of his career, Huelsing's bat came up big for Memphis early in what would be a see-saw battle early. Adam Amar got things going with a single through the right side and two batters later scored from second when Huelsing drove a single to centerfield. The RBI was the first of the Munford native's career.
UAB shortstop Jonathan Merritt led the home half of the third of with a single. He stole second and used a wild pitch to advance to third. After Allen Aubin walked, nine-hole hitter Brint Hardy brought Merritt in on a sac bunt to even the score at 1-1. Phil Bell then ripped an RBI-double to the leftfield corner to plate Aubin and give UAB a 2-1 advantage.
That lead was short-lived as Memphis retaliated with three runs in the top of the fourth. Joey Lieberman reached on an infield single and Kyle Norrid lined a base hit through the left side. A critical miscue on the ensuing play cost UAB a lead that the Tigers never gave up. Amar sac bunted to move Lieberman and Norrid to third and second, respectively. But on the play, Blazer starter Brandon Wallace opted to force Lieberman out at third. His throw sailed wide of the bag and rolled into the UAB bullpen allowing Lieberman and Norrid to score for a 3-2 Memphis advantage. A base knock by Josh Irvin scored Amar and the Tigers surged ahead 4-2.
Back-to-back RBI doubles from Danny Sawyer and Merritt tied the game and put the go-ahead run in scoring position for UAB. At that point, Tiger starter Garrett Hachtel was lifted for southpaw Dusty Davis. Davis shut the Blazers out for the remainder of the contest and surrendered just five hits to pick up his staff-best fifth win of the year. Hachtel gave up four runs on six hits in his first appearance in nearly a month.
The Tigers put the game away with five unanswered runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. A sac fly by Irvin put Memphis on top 5-4. Huelsing struck again with an RBI-single to make it 6-4. Amar pulled closer to the all-time RBI record in the seventh, when he knocked a two-run double to the leftfield corner, scoring Bill Moss and Norrid. Norrid and Amar scored three runs each in the contest.
Memphis tacked on a run in the eighth for the 9-4 final.
