MEMPHIS - The University of Memphis softball team outscored Alcorn State 17-2 in a midweek doubleheader sweep on Wednesday at the Tiger Softball Complex, winning 10-0 and 7-2.
Freshman Kimber Bossom (10-10) pitched a one-hitter for her fourth shutout of the season in game one, giving Memphis head coach Windy Thees her 250th career victory.
The Tigers (24-21) recorded 19 hits on the day with nine for extra bases. Junior Tori Gross and senior Lindsay Kelso led the squad on offense. Gross went 4-for-7 with three runs scored, two doubles and two RBI, while Kelso finished 3-for-6 with three runs scored, a home run and three RBI.
Senior Melissa Nance hit the U of M's first grand slam of the season in game one. It is her second career grand slam.
Junior Leila Dolfo had three hits on the day and all were for extra bases. Dolfo had a triple in game one and then hit a RBI double in game two and her 11th home run of the season. The home run ties her single season career high with the 11 she hit last year. The Memphis record for home runs is 12 set by Bridgette McNulty in 2006.
The Tigers scored 10 runs for the first time since beating Alabama A&M 16-1 on March 12. Kelso began the scoring with a two-out two run homer to left field after a triple by Dolfo.
Memphis then put six runs on the board in the third inning on four hits capped by the grand slam by Nance. Sophomore Leigh Rowan also had a two-run single in the inning.
Freshman Maddie McKinley ended the scoring for the Tigers with a two-run double in the fourth inning.
Bossom struck out seven batters in the five-inning victory for her 10th victory of the season. The one hit came in the third inning on a single through the left side by Michelle Lewis.
In game two, Alcorn State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI double by Adrianna Harrington. Lewis held the Tigers hitless through the first three innings before Memphis scored three runs on four hits.
Dolfo broke up the no-hitter with a solo leadoff home run to tie the game. A RBI double by McKinley and a bases loaded walk to junior Brittany Gooch gave Memphis a two run lead.
The Lady Braves regained a run in the fifth inning, but the Tigers scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a double by Dolfo and a single by Kelso to take a comfortable lead. Gross capped the scoring with a two-run double in the sixth inning.
Freshman Rayna McClinton (5-3) picked up the win after giving up two hits in four innings and striking out five. Freshman Janelle Valle pitched the final three innings for her first career save, holding Alcorn State scoreless with three hits and two strikeouts.
Memphis will next travel to Orlando, Fla., to play a three-game conference series with UCF on Saturday and Sunday.
