Memphis, Tenn. -
The University of Memphis women's soccer team will host a pair of Big 12 Conference opponents this weekend at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The Oklahoma Sooners are slated to face off against the Lady Tigers on Friday, Sept. 12 at 7:00 p.m.
Memphis enters this weekend's play with a 2-1-1 record. The Lady Tigers clawed their way to a 2-1 victory and their second win at Ole Miss on Friday, Sept. 5. Sunday afternoon's game on Sept. 7 failed to yield the same result as Memphis was shut out by the Miami Hurricanes 3-0.
"I think we'll be ready especially coming off the loss on Sunday," Head Coach Brooks Monaghan said of the defeat at the hands of Miami. "I think we're a little embarrassed by the result and we'll be fired up and ready to go. The game was a little bit hard to swallow. We are a well enough established program that we shouldn't lose like that and we usually don't. I'm ready to get back out there and prove that we are better."
The Oklahoma Sooners make their first trip to Memphis to take on the Lady Tigers. At the helm is new head coach, Nicole Nelson. The Sooner's 2008 record is 1-4-0, but Nelson has previously amassed a career coaching record of 33-19-9 while heading up Stephen F. Austin's women's soccer program. Nelson also has 15 returning players that have experience, but have not meshed well yet this season.
"Despite their record, Oklahoma is still a quality opponent," Monaghan said. "I think the girls are ready to get back out there and prove that they are stronger than the last result showed. We're going to work on some things this week to prepare our girls to go to battle against two solid Big 12 teams and I know that they will be fired up and ready to go for this weekend's games."
Memphis will take on Bill Hempen's Colorado Buffalos who are receiving votes in both this week's NSCAA and Soccer Buzz national polls. The game will take place on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 1:00 p.m. at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
