Women's Tennis Takes Down Kennesaw State, 6-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis women's tennis squad improved to 3-4 on the season with a win over the Kennesaw State Owls, 6-1, on Friday afternoon at The Racquet Club of Memphis. Friday's scheduled match with Murray State was cancelled due to severe weather in the Memphis area on Friday night and Saturday morning.
Friday's match against Kennesaw State was the first home match of the season for the U of M. It was also the first match for either of the program's this season at The Racquet Club of Memphis, the new home for the men's and women's tennis teams.
In doubles, the Lady Tigers secured the doubles point, winning two of three matches over their foes from Georgia.
At No. 1 doubles, Marjorie Ondeck and Ashley Murdock improved to 2-2 on the season with a win over Mackenzie Swindall and Morgan Carney, 8-4.
At the No. 2 spot, Kennesaw State's Iesha Holton and Vera Shkundina upended Dara Toulch and Amanda Brown, 8-2. Brown and Toulch currently have a record of 1-4 in doubles matches so far this season.
At No. 3 doubles, Courtney Collins and Kelly Gray improved to 3-1 on the season with a defeat of Therese Lagerkvist and Ayano Tanaka, 8-5. Collins and Gray's only loss on the season is to the No. 3 duo from 38th-ranked Ohio State.
In singles, the Lady Tigers took five of six matches from the Owls. At No. 1 singles, Murdock won the first set over Shkundina, 6-3, before the Kennesaw State netter bounced back to win the second set, 7-5. Murdock was able to secure the match win with a third set victory, 7-6. Murdock, a native of Memphis, Tenn., currently has a record of 3-4 during her senior season.
At the No. 2 spot, Collins, a freshman from Fulton, Miss., improved to 4-3 on the year with a 6-4, 6-0, win over Holton, 6-4, 6-0.
At No. 3 singles, Ondeck rallied from being down one set, to defeat Kennesaw State's Tanaka, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Ondeck currently has a record of 2-3 in singles this season.
At the No. 4 slot, Brown, a senior from Whitby, Ontario, took down Lagerkvist, 6-1, 6-3. Brown is currently 1-3 in singles this season.
At the No. 5 spot, Gray, a freshman from Murfreesboro, Tenn., defeated Carney, after losing the first set 6-4. The final tally for Gray over Carney was 4-6, 6-1, 1-0. Gray is currently 2-4 in singles in 2010.
Kennesaw State's lone point came from a singles win at the No. 6 spot by Swindall. The Owl netter won the first set and the third set over Andrea Arques-Garcia to pick up the victory. Arques-Garcia, a freshman from Alicante, Spain, currently has a singles record of 2-4.
The Lady Tigers will travel to the Northeast this weekend for matches against Boston College and Yale. The Tigers will start the weekend with a match against Boston College on Fri., Feb. 5 at 3 p.m. (CST) and the weekend will end with a dual against Yale on Sun., Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. (CST).
