Defense Smothers Bruins in 79-40 Victory

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - On Sunday afternoon at Elma Roane Fieldhouse, the Memphis Tigers (2-0) used a strong defensive effort to put away the Belmont Bruins (0-2), 79-40. Jasmine Lee (Bessemer, Ala./Jess Lanier HS) tallied one of two Memphis double-doubles on the afternoon with a game-high 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Nicole Dickson (Greeneville, Tenn./Greeneville) recorded the second double-double, with 10 points and 10 boards.
A Tristan Daniel three-point shot for Belmont pulled the Bruins within three points, 32-29, with 3:17 left in the first half. Memphis responded with a 40-4 run over the next 17:39 to take commanding control of the game. Haley Nelson's two-point jumper ended the Belmont drought with only 5:38 remaining in the game.
The Tiger defense forced 19 Bruin turnovers, while collecting 13 steals on the afternoon. In contrast, Memphis only committed eight turnovers. Belmont went 16-of-52 (30.8 percent) from the field, while Memphis shot 29-of-71 (40.8 percent) for the game. Memphis led in nearly every other statistical category as well: rebounds (60-32), points in the paint (48-22), points off of turnovers (18-6), second chance points (21-2), fast break points (12-2) and bench points (25-2).
Ramses Lonlack (Bertoua, Cameroon/Stoneleigh-Burnham School) was the third Tiger player in double-figures as she tallied 10 points. Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir (Springfield, Mass./New Leadership Charter) and Brittany Carter (Covington, Ga./Newton County High School) each dished out a game-high four assists.
In all, 11 Tigers saw action and 10of them recorded at least two points. Lee and Dickson are the first pair of Tigers to record double-doubles in the same game since Skakeira Copeland and Ashley Thornton each recorded a double-double against East Carolina on Feb. 20, 2009.
