MEMPHIS, Tenn. -
With two weeks before first pitch of the 2011 season, University of Memphis head baseball coach Daron Schoenrock is please with his club's progress after the first week of spring practices.
"I'm very excited about how the guys have performed through the first week of practices, Schoenrock said. "The weather allowed us to get on the field for the first four days and it's huge to be able to work on defense in February. Pitchers and hitters can get ready anytime indoors, but being able to get on the field and work on team defense is what gives us the advantage at the beginning of the year."
Schoenrock has emphasized defense with a plethora of team defensive and defensive communication drills. In addition all Tiger pitchers and hitter have gotten the opportunity to get live work in, in controlled intersquad scrimmages.
Memphis will continue it preparation for the 2011 season with practice today at 1:45 p.m. The Tigers are scheduled for a pair of live scrimmages this weekend. They will play a five-inning scrimmage at 1 p.m. on Sat., Feb 5, followed by a six-inning scrimmage beginning at 1 p.m. on Sun., Feb. 6.
