OXFORD, Miss.--Ole Miss struck first when it picked up the doubles point and Memphis men's tennis would be unable to recover, ultimately falling victim to the Rebels in a 4-0 decision on Tuesday afternoon at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
The Rebels (5-2) clinched the early lead with victories at the top two flights in doubles. Memphis tandem Joe Salisbury and David O'Hare was the first to fall in an 8-1 downing from Tucker Vorster and Jonas Lutjen at the No. 2 position.
The second match to conclude was No. 1 doubles, where Jordan Smith and David Henry were upended by twins Chris and Marcel Thiemann 8-5. In the third flight, Leon Nasemann and John Taylor were up with a 6-3 lead on Johan Backstrom and Adrian Skogeng when the Rebels retired.
Memphis (8-3, 1-1 C-USA) continued to struggle in singles play with Henry suffering a quick 6-4, 6-0 loss to the Reb's third-seeded Lutjen. Subsequent Tiger losses at No. 1 (M. Thiemann def. Salisbury 6-0, 6-2) and at No. 5 (Johan Backstrom def. John Taylor 6-1, 6-2) wrapped up the win for the Rebels and all remaining matches were suspended.
During the match, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its latest polls in which both the Tigers and Rebels dropped in the standings. Memphis now sits at No. 61 while Ole Miss fell to No. 31 from No. 18.
The substantial shifts in the polls are a result from computer calculations being used for the first time this season after weeks of coach's votes determining the rankings. The full list of rankings can be found on the ITA website by clicking here.
The Tigers will be off the rest of the week before beginning a week-long road trip during the university's spring break. Memphis will face three Conference USA opponents in SMU, Rice and Tulane, as well as Radford, with the Mustangs up first in Dallas on Sunday, March 6th at noon.
