Memphis Beats SMU Behind Adamic’s Two Goals
Oct 04, 2015 | Women's Soccer
Senior Emily Adamic scored her first two goals of the season
Senior Emily Adamic scored two goals in the final 10 minutes and Memphis completely stifled SMU as the Tigers topped the Mustangs 2-0 Sunday at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel and the Memphis defense recorded the sixth shutout of the season.
"I'm very pleased with our performance today, I thought it was one of our better performances of the season," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "The only thing I told the team was I thought we could have had a little more hunger in the box. But it was a great team win and our backline was tremendous."
Adamic came into the match as a substitute in the first half and had an immediate impact, despite not scoring until the closing minutes.
The first goal came after a pass from Catherine Levasseur and a nice finish from Adamic to lift the ball over the SMU goalkeeper and under the cross bar.
Forward Valerie Sanderson made a great run to set up the Tigers' second goal. After receiving the ball near the midfield line, she sprinted at the SMU defense and near the top of the box cut back and squared the ball to Adamic who fired it into the net.
"Emily didn't start the game but the minute she came on you could tell she was sharp. Anytime you score two goals that equals a fantastic performance but it was more than the two goals. She really settled the midfield, moved the ball around well and was a big part of our win today," Monaghan said.
The Memphis backline of seniors Marissa Duguay, Elysia Masters and Diamond Simpson along with freshman Catherine Levasseur had a dominating performance and held the Mustangs to just one shot in the match.
"SMU is a very good team and I thought we shut them down. We deserved to win today. We have to build off of this. If we can play this way and get a little more hunger in the box we'll be able to play with anybody," said Monaghan.
Memphis faces a tough road trip to Florida next weekend where they will face UCF, Thursday at 6:00 p.m. before playing against USF Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
