Memphis will begin its quest to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011 when the Tigers face off with No. 24 USF in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Â
If the No. 7 seeded Tigers can take down the No. 2 Bulls they'll face the winner of UCF/Temple in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The tournament final is scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 p.m. and will be aired live on ESPN3/WatchESPN, with a tape delay at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
Â
"Now we are into the third segment of the season and it's do or die," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "There are no excuses, you have to do everything right and I think our team is well aware of that. There have been a lot of highs and lows this season but none of that really matters. Anybody in this conference can go and win this tournament. It's been proven throughout the season that anybody can beat anybody."
Â
The Tigers and Bulls played out an exciting 2-2 draw earlier in the season, in which Memphis scored two first half goals before USF countered with two in the
second half. The point for Memphis was the only one allowed by USF at home all season and the two goals scored by the Tigers were the first and only two that the Bulls allowed at home.
Â
Both Memphis and USF are coming off of a loss in the regular-season finale, with the Tigers being taken down by a desperate East Carolina squad and USF falling to rival UCF.
Â
Despite recent disappointment in conference tournament play, the Memphis program can look back to the 2007-2011 seasons, when the Tigers won five straight league tournament titles. Last season the Tigers had high expectations after earning the No. 2 seed in the tournament, but their run was ended early with a home loss in overtime to East Carolina. The 2013 team made it to the semifinals before being eliminated on penalties.
Â
The entire conference tournament will be played at SMU's Westcott Field in Dallas, Texas. Tickets for each competition day can be purchased from the SMU ticket office at (214) 768-4263.
