Tucker Tubbs hit a grand slam and drove in six runs in the first game of a double-header to highlight a twin-bill sweep of Alcorn State Saturday at FedExPark. Memphis won the first game 14-3 before run-ruling the Braves 17-7 in the nightcap.
With the sweep, Memphis improved to 13-4 on the year and the Tigers have now won their last nine games. The last Memphis winning streak of nine games or more came in 1994 when the Tigers went 52-11. Alcorn State is now 5-17. The two teams close out the four-game series with a 1 p.m. contest Sunday at FedExPark.
Tubbs' grand slam came five years to the day of the last grand slam by a Tiger. He also had the team's first, six-RBI game since 2011. The senior from Collierville followed up a 2-for-3 outing in the first game before going 2-for-2 in the second game with two runs scored and two RBI. Tubbs had eight RBI on the day before being replaced following the third inning of Game Two with the Tigers up 10-0 in Game Two.
With five of the Tigers' starters out early, Alcorn State would get back in the game with a run in the fourth and six in the fifth, cutting the Tigers' lead to 10-7.
But Memphis would score seven runs over the final three innings for the 10-run win.
As a team, Memphis had a combined 36 hits and scored 31 runs in the twin-bill. Zach Schritenthal was 7-for-9 on the day with two RBI. Through three games of the series he is 10-for-13.
Game 1 - Memphis 14, Alcorn State 3
In Game One, Memphis starter Dylan Toscano got all the run support he would need in the second inning as the Tigers reached Braves starter Jesus Vasquez for four runs off three hits during the frame. The Tigers would go on to bang out a total of 14 hits during the game.
Toscano struck out seven and gave up five hits in six innings of work to improve to 3-1 on the year. Alcorn State starter Jesus Vasquez suffered the loss for his first decision.
In the second inning, Tucker Tubbs walked and beat a throw to second when Chris Carrier hit into a fielder's choice to the left side of the infield. Brandon Montgomery loaded the bases on a bunt single. Carter White grounded into a fielder's choice to drive in Memphis' first run. After White stole second, Damo DeMatteo's sacrifice fly to center field scored Carrier.
Schritenthal kept the offense going in the second inning with a base hit to right field to score White from third. Schritenthal would steal second to move into scoring position before Darien Tubbs extended his current hitting streak in the game with a single to left.
Alcorn State would get on the board in the fourth inning. Earl Burl III led off the inning with a single that took a hop over the glove of Schritenthal at third. After moving to second on a ground out, Burl scored on a double to the left field wall by Collin Carroll. After Nick Brooks reached on an error, Carroll scored from third on a sacrifice bunt by Walter Vives.
Memphis would double its run total and extend its lead to 8-2 in the fourth inning on Tucker Tubbs' grand slam. Ahead of Tubbs, Schritenthal led off with a single while Darien Tubbs and Carlos Williams drew walks. Tucker Tubbs' grand slam came five years to the day of the last Memphis grand slam. Rick Russell's walk-off grand slam against Tennessee Tech came on March 21, 2011.
Game 2 - Memphis 17, Alcorn State 7
Memphis would score 10 runs on 10 hits through the first two innings but need seven runs later in the game to run-rule the Braves in the nightcap.
Darien Tubbs would extend his team-leading hitting streak to 10 games with a leadoff single to begin the game as the first four Tiger batters had base hits. Memphis would score four runs off five hits in the first inning.
The second inning was highlighted by Tucker Tubbs' RBI double, his third extra-base hit of the day. The Tigers scored six runs and banged out five more hits in the second to take a 10-0 lead.
Alcorn State would get on the board in the fourth inning as Moses Charles singled and after moving to second on a wild pitch scored on Cedric Bell's RBI double.
Memphis' Matt Ferguson, making his first start on the mound, would strike out four and give up three hits before reaching his pitch limit after four innings. He would be credited with the win for his first decision.
Bell would highlight a six-run fifth inning for the Braves with another RBI double in the frame. Charles sparked the six-run inning with a leadoff single to right field and would later score the Braves' first run of the inning.
Charles went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Bell was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
After Alcorn cut the Tigers to 10-7 through five innings, the Tigers would roar back with two runs in the sixth, four in the seventh and one in the eighth.
Starting catcher Carter White, who also played left field, was 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored in the day's second game. Montgomery was 3-for-4 and his run-scoring double in the bottom of the eighth led to the game being called. Jacob Elliott, who came in as a pinch hitter and stayed in the game to play right, was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
