Four Tigers score to open up the final home weekend
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's soccer team rebounded Thursday evening with a 4-0 shutout victory over Temple at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Memphis improves to 8-5-1 on the year and 2-2-1 in American Athletic Conference play.
"It's good to get back in the winning column," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "We were coming off of a tough weekend and I thought we had a good week of practice. The girls were in very good spirits and that carried over into tonight. It's a great feeling."
The Tigers took control of the match from the very beginning. With possession for the majority of the first half, Memphis ended the half outshooting Temple 12-2.
Two of those Memphis shots found the back of the net, beginning with Jessica Lisi's fifth goal of the season in the 28th minute. After Memphis gained possession, Marie Levasseur found a gap in the defense and passed the ball up to Stasia Mallin, who served it in for Lisi to finish.
Mikayla Morton added to the Tigers lead before the break. After Levasseur made a long pass up the middle, Morton capitalized on a miscue by the Temple goalkeeper. It was Morton's seventh goal of the season.
Memphis continued to press in the second half and in the 75th minute, the Tigers capitalized once again. Levasseur added to her two-assist evening with her sixth goal of the season, lifting the Tigers to a 3-0 lead over the Owls. Levasseur finished the match with four points.
Just under 10 minutes later, Elizabeth Woerner played a ball from freshman Osa Iyare and found the back of the net. It was Woerner's team-leading ninth goal and Iyare's first collegiate assist.
Freshman goalkeeper Elizabeth Moberg finished the night with two saves and her first clean sheet. The Tigers finished the match with six corners compared to two by Temple and 20 shots compared to just six allowed.
Memphis now celebrates Senior Day Sunday afternoon prior to the 1 p.m. match against UConn. The Tigers and the Huskies will play at the Billy J. Murphy Track and Soccer Complex and the first 100 fans will receive a Memphis Tigers t-shirt.
