Memphis awaits potential at-large bid in NCAA Tournament
ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Memphis women's soccer team saw its American Athletic Conference Tournament run come to an end after falling to top-ranked UCF Knights by a score of 3-0 Friday evening. Memphis moves to 11-6-3 on the year.
Â
"I have to give credit to UCF. They are a top team," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "If you give them an inch, they take a mile. They are a team that takes advantage of their opportunities and they've done that all year. That's what happened."
Â
Two goals in the first 10 minutes including a successful penalty kick by UCF quickly put Memphis into a hole. The Tigers didn't stop applying pressure, however, to UCF as they finished the first half outshooting the Knights, 5-4.
Â
The Knights added one more goal in the 34th minute to take a 3-0 edge over the Tigers.
Â
Memphis didn't go without its opportunities, especially in the second half of action. In the 67th minute of the match, Catherine Levasseur led an offensive attack that ultimately saw Marie Levasseur with a cross into the box to Elizabeth Woerner. Woerner's shot sailed just wide of the right post.
Â
Memphis held UCF scoreless in the second half and finished the match outshooting the Knights, 11-9. Memphis also had three corners to just two by the Knights. Freshman goalkeeper Elizabeth Moberg recorded four saves for the Tigers.
Â
The Tigers will now await for a potential at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is set for Nov. 6. For more information on the Memphis women's soccer team, follow the Tigers on Facebook at /MemphisWSoccer and on Twitter and Instagram at @MemphisWSoccer.
