Tigers unable to overcome first half goal scored by the Rebels
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In a high-intensity match in front of a season-high 1,056 people, the No. 18 University of Memphis women's soccer team fell by a score of 1-0 to Ole Miss Sunday evening at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The Rebels handed the Tigers their first loss of the season, dropping Memphis to 6-1 overall.
"Anytime we play Ole Miss, it's always a battle. Credit goes to them because I thought they won the game in the first half," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "We challenged our kids at halftime and I was proud of them for the second half. We have to put 90 minutes of that intensity in a match like this."
The intensity in the match was high from start to finish. In the 20th minute of the match, Memphis goalkeeper Rachel Ashworth Shepard made a diving save to keep the score tied at 0-0. It wasn't until the 44th minute that Ole Miss scored what proved to be the game-winning goal.
After giving up the first half goal, the Memphis offense came out with a higher sense of urgency in the second half. The Tigers had more opportunities in the second half with increased possession, but couldn't find the back of the net.
The Tigers finished with six shots and created countless other opportunities in the second half. Ashworth Shepard finished with three total saves in the match.
Memphis will now head out west to take on Idaho and Gonzaga next weekend. For more information on the Memphis women's soccer team, follow the Tigers on Facebook at /MemphisWSoccer and on Twitter and Instagram at @MemphisWSoccer.
